Weekend guide (29 June - 1 July): Floral display at the Gardens, art book fair, rugby match

A range of family-friendly events will be taking place in Singapore this first weekend after the June holidays, from a flea market at Kampong Glam, to international performances at the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Take your family to Gardens by the Bay’s first-ever floral display showcasing more than 50 varieties of blooms in a spectrum of red, oranges and yellows, in which some of the flowers were grown by the nature park’s horticulturists. The flower display is designed to resemble imaginary worlds such as an undersea realm, where octopuses, giant clams and manta rays reign.

When: 25 May – 1 July, 9am to 9pm

So Gelam Market

Unwind at this flea market filled with food and drink stalls, as well as shops selling items such as homemade beauty products, artisanal lifestyle products, art prints and henna. Lined with colourful tents, fairy lights, batik buntings and a centre lawn with mats to relax, the street will be closed off to motor traffic. The market aims to bring back the good old days of laid-back weekends where neighbours chat and relax over food, drinks and entertainment.

Singapore Art Book Fair

Head down to this independent annual festival specialising in contemporary art books and zines. Featuring a range of art-related fringe activities, the fair will showcase art books, art catalogues, monographs, printed ephemera and zines from publishing exhibitors such as risograph print studio, Knuckles & Notch and Shanghai’s Bananafish Books.

4th of July Celebration

Celebrate the American spirit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in Singapore at this annual 4th of July celebration. Enjoy a family-friendly day of food, drinks, music, and carnival games. Attractions include a super-sized inflatable obstacle course, line dancing, and a marketplace for gifts. The event will be capped off by a spectacular fireworks display.

Modern and Beyond

Attend this annual exhibition showcasing diverse artworks from 53 members of the Modern Art Society Singapore (MASS), which is aimed at educating and heightening public appreciation of modern art. The exhibition will feature live art demonstrations by MASS members intended to evoke dialogue between fellow artists and the community.

Children’s Season: Let’s Explore!

Take part in exciting activities with your family at the Asian Civilisations Museum. Visitors will able to carve their own rubber stamps inspired by carvings on the stone walls of Angkor temples or decorate their own travel journals. On top of that, there are performances featuring international artistes and a storytelling tour about fantastical folktales and stories.

Super Rugby: Sunwolves vs Bulls

Expect to see high intensity sporting action in the match-up between Singapore’s adopted home team, HITO-Communications Sunwolves, and South Africa’s Bulls. Coached by former All Blacks head coach Jamie Joseph, Sunwolves will be looking to exact revenge on Bulls in their second match against one other after losing to them by three points in 2016. This match will be the only Super Rugby game in Singapore this year.
