Weekend guide (13-15 January): Singapore Art Week, Pokémon Run, KidsFest

The M1 Fringe Festival, which encompasses several art-related activities and showcases, has yet to conclude, and another art festival is all set to kick-off this week. The Singapore Art Week (SAW) promises 12 days of non-stop arts entertainment with several events lined up. Aside from that, the upcoming weekend also has a wide range of activities that will have you spoilt for choice. Options range from the Aliwal Urban Art Festival boasting contemporary art, street dancing and skateboarding, to a nature trek at Bukit Brown cemetery and a motor show.

1. Aliwal Urban Arts Festival (part of SAW)

Dubbed as one of the hippest arts festival, the Aliwal Urban Arts Festival features art inspired by international street culture. The highlights of the festival are street art and graffiti, graphic art, music, street dancing and skateboarding acts, all nested in one of Singapore’s most culturally diverse precincts, Kampong Glam.

2. ARTWALK Little India (part of SAW)

Back for its third year, this public art project makes use of various locations around the culturally rich Little India district to bring to life traditional folktales and mythologies through animation, along with several art installations around the precinct and immersive performances over the course of five days.

3. Art After Dark (part of SAW)

A signature event by Gillman Barracks, Art After Dark is a unique art exhibition that, as its name would suggest, happens outdoors after the sun goes down. Featuring murals, sculptures and interactive installations, the art showcase, Lock Route, ties in with SAW and presents the work of local and international artists. Visitors can also look forward to a good time with live music performances.

4. KidsFest

While the adults immerse themselves in the various happenings of SAW, there’s something in store for the little ones as well. Boasting nine different productions over five weeks in two venues, KidsFest posits itself as a festival of world-class theatre for young people. The acts presented bring to life scenes from well-loved books and favourite childhood characters.

5. Pokémon Run

The first of its kind in Southeast Asia, this Pokémon-themed short run (4-5km) combines running and exercise into a family-friendly fun activity. Participants can expect to encounter some of the latest additions by Nintendo 3DS, Pokémon Sun & Pokémon Moon during the run, while savouring the tasty treats at the event promenade.

6. Bukit Brown Heritage Trail

Also known as one of the ‘scariest’ cemeteries in Singapore, the iconic Bukit Brown cemetery goes a long way back, with many tales to tell and a rich history. Organised by the Temasek Rural Exploring Enthusiasts, the trek aims to educate participants on the history of the cemetery. A special guest will take participants through the trail.

7. Rojak! Weekend Festival

Rojak, which means ‘mixture’ in Malay, takes a literal meaning at this festival where music, art and food all meet at one venue. Hosted along the iconic Singapore River at Asian Civilisations Museum, the festival will treat visitors to roving live acts and performances, along with local films.

8. Singapore Motorshow 2017

Back for its third edition, the Singapore Motorshow will be occupying two levels at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre over four days, with major vehicle brands participating this time. There will also be a stunt show by Russ Swift, with tickets sold separately from the exhibition. Last year’s Motorshow saw more than 58,000 visitors.
