Watch This Woman's Historic DNC Speech as the First Openly Transgender Person to Speak at a Major Party Convention

National Press Secretary of the Human Rights Campaign Sarah McBride made history on Thursday night as the first openly transgender person to speak at a major party convention - and she absolutely killed it.

In her remarks at the Democratic National Convention, the LGBTQ rights activist talked about coming out as transgender while serving as her college's student body president, and explained some of her work fighting for LGBTQ rights.

"My name is Sarah McBride and I am a proud transgender American," she began. "But despite our progress, so much work remains."

McBride then recounted marrying her terminally ill husband, a transgender man, in 2014, and the heartbreak of his death just a few days later. The experience was a reminder of how precious life is, and how important it is that we continue the fight for equality for all.

"His passing taught me that every day matters when it comes to building a world where every person can live their life to the fullest," she said. "Hillary Clinton understands the urgency of our fight. She'll work with us to pass the Equality Act, to combat violence against transgender women of color, and to end the HIV and AIDS epidemic once and for all."
