Sir Michael Gambon is known across the world for his extensive catalogue of work across TV, film, radio and theatre in a career spanning five decades.

The actor died peacefully in hospital at the age of 82, his family said on Thursday.

Here, The Independent takes a look back at his incredible career, which saw the Dublin-born star of the stage and screen win four TV Baftas.

In recent years he played Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter films.

He is also known for playing French detective Jules Maigret in ITV series Maigret, and for his 1986 role as Philip Marlow in Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective.
