At Allrecipes, we know one thing is for certain: Moms know best. From shopping secrets to cooking tips and tricks, moms pass on their kitchen wisdom and, of course, recipes. And celebrity moms are no exception. That's why we were particularly invested (and charmed!) when Jennifer Garner took to her Instagram for another episode of her "Pretend Cooking Show" accompanied by none other than her mom, Pat.

We're longtime fans of Garner and her "Pretend Cooking Show" on Instagram for many reasons. Not only has Garner featured one of our recipes on the show (fangirl moment!), but she's always hilarious, humble, and entertaining as heck whenever she takes to the kitchen. And her recipes are legit: Garner's "pizza cracker" was an instant classic, and we added her five-ingredient pasta to the weeknight rotation immediately after tasting it. So what could be better than a new episode? A new episode with Garner's adorable mom.

While donning matching embroidered sweaters—featuring a quote of Pat's "I'm hardly ever without buttermilk"—the mother-daughter duo bake up one of Garner's favorite pies from her childhood. To be honest, we didn't even need to see the recipe to be sold. But unsurprisingly, it's a summery, retro recipe we can't wait to make. Plus, it's got a salty secret, and it's from a vintage issue of our sister publication, Southern Living. Tick, tick, and tick. Here's how to make Pat Garner's family-famous Chiffon Pie.

Jennifer Garner's Childhood Favorite Peach Chiffon Pie

The Garners' go-to summer pie is a retro recipe from the 1989 edition of Southern Living's annual recipe cookbook. According to Garner, the recipe is credited to a Mrs. Clifford B. Smith, Sr. of White Hall, Maryland. Chiffon Pies are a light-as-air desserts that date back to the 1920s, but peaked in popularity in the 1950s. Typically, they feature a mousse-like creamy, aerated filling set with gelatin in a graham cracker or pie crust. But, the Garners' pie is a little bit different.

Their beloved recipe features a meringue baked in a pie dish to form a light crust-like shape, then filled with whipped cream and seasonal fruit. It's almost like a Pavlova meets Chiffon Pie. Chopped pecans and a surprisingly salty snack get folded into whipped meringue: Saltine crackers.

We love swapping Saltines for graham crackers in your pie crusts all summer long: The sweet-salty combination makes any pie that much more irresistible, and clearly the Garners got the memo. Their Chiffon Pie uses Saltine cracker crumbs (from 17 crackers to be exact, according to Pat) to add a little saltiness to the sweet meringue.

Once the meringue crust is baked and cooled, the duo whips up (literally) into a quick, simple filling. About a pound of any seasonal fruit—the recipe calls for peaches, Garner uses strawberries in the video—gets sliced and folded into lightly-sweetened whipped cream. In the video, Jenn says the berry-filled iteration is reminiscent of Eton Mess (a British dessert), to which her mom Pat replies, "Eatin' what?" Gotta love moms.

According to Jenn, it's got an "irresistible crunch:chew ratio," and is "absolute summer heaven," especially when you use "whatever stone fruit smelled fresh at the fruit stand." Plus with just 8 ingredients, it's easy enough for any lazy weeknight or summer occasion.

And while Pat has the recipe memorized, Jenn graciously shared it in the description of the video on Instagram, so all of us can bake it at home, too. So make this pie, savor summer and its incredible bounty of fruit, and celebrate moms everywhere.
