Although we're two months into the new year, one of the most sweeping performances in TV so far has been from Leo Woodall in Netflix's latest tearjerker One Day. The series follows the story of Dexter (played by Woodall) and Emma (played by Ambika Mod), who spend the night together after graduating from university and embark on a 20-year friendship.

In the series, viewers see Dexter self-destructive behaviours as he attempts to avoid his problems and bury his emotions, before maturing into a self-respecting and down-to-earth father. Prior to his role in the 14-episode Netflix hit, Woodall was best known for starring in a supporting role in the second season of The White Lotus as Jack, a charismatic young man from Essex.

Although his rise to stardom may seem recent, what's less known is that Woodall comes from a long line of TV and film veterans.

The actor's mother went to drama school, which is where she met his father, the actor Andrew Woodall. Woodall (senior) is best known for his theatre roles including the titular character in Angus Jackson's 2017 production of Julius Caesar. Meanwhile, the One Day star's step-father Alexander Morton is also an actor, and has starred in Taggart, Second Sight and Monarch Of The Glen.

In a 2022 interview with W magazine, the actor revealed that his great-great-great-great-grandmother is Maxine Elliott, a widely-known silent actor and theatre owner off-Broadway in New York. She was best known for her roles in Fighting Odds, From Dusk To Dawn and The Eternal Magazine.

Earlier this year, Woodall told the Guardian that he was initially 'nervous' about what his family would think of him as an actor. 'I’ve always felt this personal pressure to make it. And they’ve always been wonderful and supportive,' he told the publication.

On where that feeling comes from, he added: 'It’s definitely an approval thing. It’s nothing to do with how they are. It’s completely self-inflicted. And that’s OK, I suppose. It’s a motivator.'

Famous family aside, Woodall is forgoing his own path in TV and film and we can't wait to see the actor's next move. Watch this space.
