Easties are likely familiar with the popular Dunman Food Centre, located along 271 Onan Road. Though it is small in size, it boasts a number of great and affordable hawker stalls. If you’re in the area and are craving for some ayam penyet, Wah! Penyet by Barakallah Delights is a stall that you can consider checking out.
Wah! Penyet is located on the first floor of Dunman Food Centre. Its menu consists of various rice-based dishes and other classic Malay delights, like mee rebus and mee soto.
Priced from S$4.50 to S$8 per main, the items at Wah! Penyet are considerably affordable, with delectable ingredients such as fried chicken and grilled fish.
What I tried at Wah! Penyet
The first dish that I had to try was Wah! Penyet’s titular Nasi Ayam Penyet (S$7). This dish came with a generous amount of rice, a large fried chicken leg, a piece of fried tofu, fried tempeh, assorted vegetables and sambal chilli.
I was immediately captivated by the enormous piece of fried chicken atop the rice, which donned a stunning golden brown hue and a crackly, crisp looking surface.
The glistening white meat hidden beneath the surface of the chicken skin was tender and tore apart easily. It had a light herb-like fragrance, and the skin of the chicken was crispy and delightful to savour.
The fried tofu was a welcome addition to the dish. It had a light nutty flavour and a soft and silky texture that contrasted with the rest of the elements nicely.
The piece of fried tempeh had a crunchy exterior and a firm, chunky texture that reminded me of yam. It was mild and earthy, making for an interesting and delightful side.
I thoroughly enjoyed Wah! Penyet’s sambal chilli, which had a stunning vibrant red colour. The sambal packed a punch, with just enough heat to satisfy my spice cravings. It was salty and savoury, and it provided a good amount of flavour to the neutral-tasting rice and vegetables.
Overall, I found Wah! Penyet’s Nasi Ayam Penyet to be worth the price in relation to the number of toppings and the large portion size.
Next up was Wah! Penyet’s Mee Rebus (S$4.50), a familiar Malay dish made with yellow noodles, a thick gravy, a hard-boiled egg, chopped tau pok and green chilli.
The thick yellow noodles were well-coated in the gravy, which was sweet, savoury and saucy. The gravy also had a very light hint of spice which added to its aroma.
No mee rebus dish is complete without the egg and tau pok. As with most other mee rebus dishes, Wah! Penyet’s rendition of the dish was satisfying and filling. Though I didn’t find it to be all that outstanding, it was still a solid dish for S$4.50.
Finally, I ended off my meal with the Mee Soto (S$4.50), consisting of yellow noodles, sliced chicken and chicken broth.
The yellow noodles were soft and well-cooked. The shredded chicken, on the other hand, was a little on the drier side. I would have preferred if there was more chicken for there to be a more balanced ratio of chicken to noodles.
I really liked the broth of the mee soto, which was rich and full-bodied. It was packed full of flavour and was not too salty either, perfectly pairing with the noodles and the chicken.
Like the Mee Rebus, Wah! Penyet’s Mee Soto did not particularly blow me away, but still managed to be very tasty and satisfying.
I was left feeling content with my meal at Wah! Penyet, and I was especially impressed by their Nasi Ayam Penyet dish. The prices of the food at this stall are quite reasonable, given the pretty sizeable portions. Their Mee Rebus and Mee Soto reminded me of most other Malay stalls in Singapore, so I wouldn’t travel down to the East just to have them again. However, for those who live in the vicinity, Wah! Penyet is a great way to satisfy your Malay food cravings quickly.
Be sure to try out Wah! Penyet’s Nasi Ayam Penyet, as that is what they are known for. Alternatively, why not order one of their other rice-based dishes, like the Nasi Ayam Bakar or Ikan Bawal Penyet?
