Vivian Lai admits past company policies hampered romance

19 Mar – Vivian Lai recently admitted that her record label's no-dating policies was the reason why she didn't confess to her relationship back in the '90s.

As reported on Mingpao, the singer, who was romantically linked to Louis Yuen in the midst of her popularity in the Hong Kong music scene during that time, stated that unlike today, where artistes are free to date anybody and tell their fans about it, singers in her days were advised not to be open about their personal affairs.

"The label thinks that if you are married, then you are going to lose your fans of the opposite sex. This is because they treat you like you're their girlfriend and if you are married, the fantasy will be ruined," she said.

Vivian stated that aside from not announcing her relationship, she also has to make sure not to be photographed with a man to avoid such rumours.

When asked whether her relationship with Louis, which is said to have only lasted for more than a year, Vivian, who never acknowledged their relationship in the past, only responded, "At the time, we were just two young kids. We got together and we separated."
