It’s easy enough to beautify your walls with easy-to-score artwork from shops or to craft it yourself. From artist-created Etsy finds to custom wallpaper murals, wall decor ideas abound. One of these reliable artwork destinations is IKEA, the Swedish shopping mecca brimming with ready-to-frame prints and posters.

One of their current prints from their PJÄTTERYD series depicts apples encircled by green leaves—and it retails for just $10! While the picture is eye-catching all on its own, TikTok user @tinalemac took the still life a step further by putting a DIY spin on it.

Rather than hanging the print as-is, Tina was inspired by a viral DIY trend to turn it into a pixelated artwork. Her method for achieving this look is super beginner-friendly and the result is pretty darn cool!

Using a Cricut acrylic ruler and a white chalk fabric pencil, she overlays the main image with half-inch squares, which essentially creates a paint-by-number situation for painting the pixels (without the numbers, of course). For a helpful aid, Tina pixelated the image on her phone (using Canva can create this effect), allowing her to choose just the right shades for all the highlights, shadows, and specific hues seen on the apples. It guided the placement of the colors as well.

Tina seems like a pro when it comes to color-matching, so this is when you’ll need to rely on those skills to replicate the pixelated visuals, turning to paints you may have on hand or you can head to the craft store to stock up. Remember, since you’re covering up the original image, the colors don’t have to be perfect. As you’ll also notice watching her TikTok, you won’t stay within the boundaries of each object—instead, you’ll extend beyond those boundaries to create squares.

And, voilà! Tina made an everyday image look altogether futuristic with this DIY trick.

Commenters appeared to be on board with the pixelated makeover, adding that the pixels make the image look like it’s “hilariously censored” and that it's giving Minecraft vibes. They also took sides regarding the extent of the pixelation, saying that they like that only the apples are pixelated, while others recommended additionally pixelating the leaves or the background.

We think it’s a rad way to make an artwork look unexpected. So, what do you think? Pixel it up, or leave artwork as it is?
