Veteran actor Joe Cheng dies

26 Jan – Veteran actor Joe Cheng passed away recently due to heart disease.

According to Groove Asia website, director Lee Lik Chi updated his Facebook last week with a status saying, "Our good friend Joe Cheng passed away in Shenzhen this morning. His daughter informed us that he had a heart problem. To him I say, see you there and travel safe, Big Joe."

His memorial took place in the Grand Peace Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom and was attended by many industry insiders, including actress Teresa Mo, actors Michael Tse, Vincent Kuk, Ronald Cheng, Sam Lee, Chan Kwok Kwan, Rachel Kan, Christine Chau and Chik Kei Yi.

His long-time acting buddies, Stephen Chow Sing Chi and Ng Man Tat did not appear in person but sent floral arrangements, with the former sending two bouquets representing his company and himself.

Michael Tse revealed that Joe Cheng was his dance division elder but they have never worked together on any movie or television series. He stated, "He was very optimistic. He would make friends around him happy and his smile was very infectious."

He added, "The last time I ran into him was around two years ago at a Mainland event. When I received the bad news, it was very sudden and he was so young. I wish him a peaceful journey."

Joe Cheng was a character actor who often appeared in Stephen Chow's films, including "From Beijing with Love" and "Love on Delivery". His latest film would be the upcoming Chinese New Year film "Hotel Deluxe".

Joe Cheng was 51.
