It’s that time of the year again – Singapore’s National Day looms and a new official NDP song is released, to the amusement and chagrin of Singaporeans.

While official NDP songs from previous years have sparked discussion online, it is an unofficial National Day song that’s gaining attention this year.

Titled ‘One Nation Together’ after the official NDP2017 theme, the song is a ground-up effort which showcases videos contributed by Singaporeans around the world and in Singapore.

Composed by local songwriter Alvin Oon and performed by singing group Peranakan Sayang, the song’s music video features some 300 Singaporeans between the ages of eight months to 80 years.

“It is far from being a professionally-polished product, but there was a lot of effort, fun, heart, pride, celebration, passion and patriotism in the production, which is what it is all about as we celebrate Singapore’s National Day,” said Oon, who also wrote “Give Me Back My Terrex Chia” in January 2017.

Reactions to the song have been positive so far, with some netizens claiming that it is better than this year’s official NDP song.

“One Nation Together is definitely a more catchy song than the original NDP song. Though the lyrics are simple but [sic] they represent what every Singaporean feels for Singapore,” a comment by Ching Kim Hwa said.

“This ‘national song’ definitely have [sic] great potential as it has a catchy melody and a sing-along range. I much prefer this to the ifficial [sic] version,” said netizen Kelvin Tan in another comment.
