Universal Pictures launches its Dark Universe

Everybody wants an extended universe (and a dependable movie franchise) these days. Marvel’s been the most successful at it, followed by Fox, while Sony is re-embarking on its efforts to build one. The latest studio to give it a go: Universal Pictures, which has just launched its Dark Universe, comprising revivals of its classic horror characters such as the Mummy and the Invisible Man.

As you can see from the photo above, the Dark Universe has some heavy hitters signed up, including the biggest name of all: Tom Cruise. Johnny Depp will play the Invisible Man, while Javier Bardem is Frankenstein’s Monster. The Dark Universe is being led by core creatives Alex Kurtzman, who also serves as director and producer of The Mummy, and The Mummy producer Chris Morgan.

The respective Dark Universe films will be connected by an age-old, mysterious multi-national organization known as Prodigium, led by Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe). Its goal: to track, study and—when necessary—destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world. According to Universal, Prodigium protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists just beyond the thin membrane of civilized society…and will go to any length to contain it.

It all kicks off with The Mummy (check out the latest trailer), headlined by The Cruiser, Russell Crowe and Sofia Boutella. Next upBride of Frankenstein, to be directed by Bill Condon and released on February 14, 2019. The lead actress in the movie will be announced shortly.
