Uniqlo: C range by former Chloe designer Clare Waight Keller drops today - shop now
The creative designer who's cemented herself as a creative director at Givenchy and Chloé previously is also known for creating Meghan Markle's wedding dress.
Fashion retailer Uniqlo is on a roll this year – not only did they successfully launch the second partnership with Studio Ghibli on 'Hey, Let's Go' collection, they also dropped a range with Kaws, Mame Kuroguochi and Ines de la Fressange respectively.
This time around, Uniqlo and Clare Waight Keller will unveil the debut collection Uniqlo : C on 15 September online and at Uniqlo's Orchard Central Global Flagship and ION Orchard stores. The creative designer who's cemented herself as a previous creative director at Givenchy and Chloé is also known for creating Meghan Markle's wedding dress.
She's known for her mature yet romantic and feminine lines, and it's evident that her affordable collection with Uniqlo will do well – a quick check on the morning of 15 Sept showed that Uniqlo Singapore's website was down for almost half an hour. A Uniqlo statement reads: "Due to the high volume, our website traffic is currently restricted to ensure a smooth a shopping experience and check out. In a media statement, Clare shared that, "the collection is about bringing casual chic to an everyday, essential wardrobe. For me, that captures a modern, effortless sense of style something I’ve done for years and wanted to bring into this collection, to express what I believe is true to us."
The C in the collection name stands for multiple layers of things: "Sometimes it’s connected to a collection I’m working on. Sometimes it’s just a spirit. It stands for casual and chic, city, clarity, connection, capsule, connectivity, creativity. And also, it stands for me."

We asked Clare in an email interview how she would recommend Asian women dress in our tropical climate and she shared: "It’s about the layering, for sure. The fact that you have these different weights of product. The very lightweight dresses are great for tropical climate, and you can layer with a turtleneck underneath or with a shirt for colder days. And then you put on the blouson or the nylon coat. It’s all about these different layering pieces for various times of the year, which is an important part of the story, that these pieces look great layered together."
We've also seen the Round bag in a different style for this collection, and Claire chose to use faux leather: "My version of Uniqlo's popular Round Shoulder Bag comes in a chic faux leather, and is a slightly larger version than the original with an expandable pleat on the bottom for added utility. In the designing process, we try to choose fabric carefully and consciously; we are always asking ourselves how we can do this better and how we can be the most sustainable when we think of fabric choices."
Her definite moment working with Uniqlo has been a fulfilling one and she hopes to continue working together: "Working with Uniqlo was an enjoyable experience. First of all, the scale of Uniqlo business is completely different from the brands I have worked for. Despite such a large scale, it was a pleasant surprise to me that this is a company that pays attention to very small details and demands high precision in everything it does. Before a product is launched, the entire design and production process is checked and checked again and again, and the manufacturing process is truly meticulous. I had not expected them to go this far. I did more fittings for Uniqlo : C than I’ve done for collections in the past! The Uniqlo team considers the purpose behind every piece, and how that item becomes an essential part of your wardrobe. That really tapped into my own approach of creating clothes for women to wear in their everyday lives - we were really aligned on this."
If you're thinking of snagging some of her pieces online, we'd recommend the pleated skirt and some of the light, flowy shirts that you can wear in the office and in our tropical climate. As most of her designs are catered towards Fall/Winter, buying these timeless coats to wear for your European vacation may be a worthwhile investment.
