The Undeniable Benefits of Dressing Well at the Beach

Dressing to the nines for a big night out is a given. But getting all gussied up to play in the sun and sand? Yeah, you should do that, too.

Picture this: The sun is slowly setting over the ocean. You’re somewhere between establishing a base tan and nursing a sunburn. The breeze is blowing salt air off the water as you gather the essentials you brought with you for a day well spent on the shore. Lunch—tacos secured from a cart, washed down with a couple brown-bagged Coronas—was hours ago. You’re hungry. Parched. And that bar over there, the one with all the beautiful, stylish people milling about outside, is calling your name.

Instead of rolling in wearing an old college tee, baggy trunks, and flip-flops, wouldn’t it be nice to arrive looking, well, nice? So you go home and change. You put on something that makes you feel good. Then you head back just in time to find the scene faded and yourself exhausted. Clearly, this is not an ideal scenario.

Skip it entirely by preparing properly. Swap that worn-out swimwear for trim trunks with tailoring-inspired details like tab adjusters that make them feel more “short” than “swim.” (Orlebar Brown’s got you covered on that front.) Pair those with an open-knit button-up that’s breezy enough for an afternoon at the shore but won’t look out of place while you’re sipping a spritz on a leather lounger. Add a great watch and some boat shoes (they’re back, as you’ve surely heard) and you’ve got a combo that’ll work all day and night—no costume change required.

Because after years of anything-goes style, folks are putting on clothes with a sense of occasion again. They’re devising outfits that elevate the entire experience. You can join them. But don’t do it because it’s on-trend. Do it because it’s worth it. Because it’s been a long day and it’s time for a drink. And now you’re dressed like you deserve one.
