Avid char kway teow fans, you may have visited Hock Kee Fried Kway Teow, also known as Fu Ji Fried Kway Teow at Berseh Food Centre. Unfortunately, I’m deeply saddened to share that Uncle Song passed away late last night, after frying his last plate of CKT on 18 Mar 2024, which also marks the last day of operation for the stall.

The late Uncle Song was 69 years of age this year, and had spent over 40 years frying char kway teow behind the wok. He inherited the stall from his mother-in-law, who established the business from a humble pushcart stall in the 1960s along Maude Road.

The char kway teow stall was located in a kopitiam at Maude Road for about 2 decades, before it moved to Syed Alwi Road in 2015. Thereafter, it relocated again to Berseh Food Centre in March 2018.

The char kway teow here boasted an enticing old-school flavour, featuring fishcake slices, cockles, Chinese sausage, and egg.

Although many netizens had commented that the portion of ingredients in the char kway teow served at Hock Kee could have been more substantial, many others also raved about its delicious taste and smokey wok hei flavour.

For those who would like to pay respects to the late Uncle Song, the wake will be held for 5 days, starting 19 Mar 2024 at 388A Bukit Batok Avenue 5, Singapore 651388.

From all of us at Sethlui.com, we thank Uncle Song for his tireless efforts behind the wok at Hock Kee Fried Kway Teow and offer our deepest condolences to the family.
