Overview of new TV shows in October

Still haven’t caught up with September’s shows? Then you’ll be even busier in October, which sees the return of Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow on Warner TV! There are also many new Korean dramas on Viu, with remake The Beauty Inside recycling a fan favourite film. On the Netflix side, we’ve got Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the new season of the Castlevania anime. It’ll be an entertaining October for sure.

The Beauty Inside (2 Oct)
Viu

Han Se-Kye is a top actress. She is known as a troublemaker and the object of many rumours. Her life is a mystery, but, in reality, she suffers from an unusual phenomenon. At a certain point every month, her appearance changes to a different person. She lives one week out of every month with a different appearance. Han Se-Kye meets Seo Do-Jae. Seo Do-Jae is an executive at an airline company. He seems perfect with an attractive appearance and possessing smarts, but he suffers from an inability to recognize faces. He hides this disability and tries hard to memorize people by their habits and mannerisms. The only person’s face that he is able to recognize is Han Se-Kye. By meeting her, his life changes.

The Beauty Inside is inspired by a 2015 Korean film, also titled The Beauty Inside — which was in turn inspired by a 2012 US film of the name same, showing us that Korean media will recycle an idea ad infinitum. However, it is still a fairly novel premise and a promising one, what with its themes of the meaning of true beauty. Here’s hoping that this adaptation lasts us for a while (and we won’t get the same one in another 3 years time).

Folklore (7 Oct, Sundays 10pm)
HBO (StarHub TV Ch 601)

HBO Asia’s new horror anthology series, Folklore, features the superstitions and myths across six Asian countries by six different directors.

HBO’s horror anthology series focuses exclusively on Asian ghost stories — and we all know that Asian horror is far more intimate and terrifying than Western horror. Singapore’s episode is directed by none other than Eric Khoo (on 21 October), focusing on the rampage of a pontianak. Satan’s Slaves director, Joko Anwar, helms the first episode about a Wewe Gombel, a vicious creature that kidnaps children.

Arrow (Season 7) (16 Oct, Tuesdays 9.50pm)

Warner TV (StarHub TV Ch 515, Singtel TV Ch 306)

After years of denying himself his own life as Oliver Queen in order to be The Arrow, Oliver left Starling City with Felicity and made a home in suburbia. But their newly tranquil lives are upended when an evil new organization, H.I.V.E., takes over the newly-christened Star City. Oliver is forced to don the hood once more…but can he keep his aim as The Arrow without losing the life he has fought so hard to get back?

Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) is still doing pull-ups in the Season 7 trailer, so we know for sure he’ll be back in action in some later episodes. The issue now is — how will they undo the big reveal of the Season 6 finale, where Green Arrow revealed his identity to the world? Will we still see him assuming the identity of Green Arrow, or will he change his name again (like in Season 4)?

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (26 Oct)
Netflix

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tells the story of Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), a half-witch half-mortal teenage girl. She’s been waiting her whole life for her 16th birthday, but something wicked this way comes, forcing her to choose between the path of light and the path of night.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina looks like another great reinvention of a classic series, and it’s done by the same folk who created the updated Riverdale series! Sure, we won’t be seeing the typical hijinks of the day, but it also means we’ll get to delve into magical mythos of the series. Plus, the magic SFX will definitely be a lot less corny than the previous Sabrina series!
