Christmas decorations mostly skew traditional—red and green color schemes, a star-shaped tree topper, and gold and silver ornaments. Frankly, unless you're interested in an all-pink tree or a novelty theme, it can be tricky to think of an original idea. Thankfully, the hard working influencers of the internet have plenty of ideas to spark inspiration for this year’s holiday decorations. And the best one we've seen in a long time involves a shower tension rod.

Yes, really. The curtain rod, usually reserved for rentals and college dorm rooms and notorious for being easy to yank down, is actually the key to a chic and showstopping Christmas garland hack. Jen Rothbury (known as @crack_the_shutters on Instagram), showed off how she decked the halls this holiday season. Thanks to a tension rod, the transition space between her living room and dining room is now a winter wonderland adorned with garlands, string lights, and ornaments.

Rothbury started by putting up an extra long tension rod at a low height, which allowed her to cover it with her faux garlands and eucalyptus—layered for a lush appearance and each secured with zip ties—without having to reach too far overhead. Faux garlands are better than real in this case because they’re lighter and easier to bend and manipulate. Plus, you won’t have to worry about the pine needles dropping all over your floor. With help from another set of hands, Rothbury slowly and carefully inched the rod up toward the top of the opening and fastened it in place.

String lights (battery-operated to avoid any unsightly cords) were woven throughout the strands to make the garland even more whimsical. Rothbury also hung a few oversized ornaments, paper decorations, and wooden beads along the rod, and finished everything off with velvet bows. The DIY project only takes a few hours, making it perfect for a weekend activity or a pre-party final touch. And because there are no nails, screws, or wall-damaging hardware involved, this unique decoration is completely rental apartment friendly.
