From the soft, sandy shores of Hilton Head Island (a World’s Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree frequently voted among the nation’s top islands) to the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Upstate, South Carolina is spoiled with undeniable natural beauty. But it’s not just the stunning vistas and wide-open spaces that draw visitors to destinations across the Palmetto State; South Carolina is home to many vacation-worthy resorts — and our readers voted for their favorites.

How Voting Works

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

  • Location

  • Service

  • Food

  • Value

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

The South Carolina Lowcountry — where you’ll find Charleston, Hilton Head Island, and countless other beach towns along 187 miles of coastline — is home to world-renowned golf resorts, waterfront properties, and even a Disney hotel. This year, our readers loved The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort (No. 3) — “Southern charm at its best,” said one — and “timeless and private” Montage Palmetto Bluff (No. 2), but some of the state’s top-ranking hotels were newcomers from the Upstate. Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville, Autograph Collection (at No. 4), opened in downtown Greenville in 2022, and our readers praised the hotel’s location just steps from Reedy River Falls and Main Street’s local shops and restaurants. Meanwhile, Hotel Hartness just opened its doors in 2023, but it’s already a clear favorite among our readers as this year’s No. 1 resort in South Carolina.

Even though it has only been open for a year, Hotel Hartness is already making its mark on the Upstate South Carolina hotel scene. Readers commended the friendly staff and beautiful property; one described the 73-room resort as “modern and beautiful, yet warm and welcoming.” Located a 20-minute drive from downtown Greenville, the family home-turned-resort is located in the Hartness community on nearly 500 acres of rolling pastures, woods, and lakes. On-site drinks and dining are found at The Captain and Patterson Kitchen + Bar, a contemporary American restaurant. Guest rooms range from standard queen and king rooms to expansive suites with balconies and relaxing spa suites at Spa H.
