New in town: Xin Yue Lai Bak Kut Teh — 3rd gen herbal JB claypot bak kut teh & home-style dishes

As Singapore is still stuck in continuous rainfall, many of us may crave the peppery bak kut teh to warm our souls. So, you could say Xin Yue Lai Bak Kut Teh arrived at just the right time, as they opened as recently as 22 Dec 2023

Xin Yue Lai Bak Kut Teh - eatery

Xin Yue Lai opened on Horne Road at the ever-bustling Jalan Besar. It’s a long distance away from Auntie Yue Lai’s – the matriarch’s – home of Johor Bahru. The heart and soul of her recipes are rooted there, spanning 3 generations. With her new Singapore outlet, she’s here to share them.

Xin Yue Lai Bak Kut Teh 2 types

The main star of the new eatery is the Malaysian-style claypot bak kut teh, which comes in two types. The first is the soupy Herbal Bak Kut Teh (S$8.80 for Small, S$16.80 for Medium, S$33.80 for Large)

The most common style is the Teochew version. At Xin Yue Lai Bak Kut Teh, they offer a far more robust and darker broth. They use various pork parts, not just the ribs, and season with cinnamon, star anise, dang gui and a liberal amount of soy sauce.

Diners can also opt for add-ons like Fish Maw (S$3), Razor Clam (S$3) and Kidney (S$2) should they like to indulge. Diners can also request soup refills at no limit.

The other version of bak kut teh on offer here is the Dry Bak Kut Teh (S$9.80), which serves the pork belly in thick, dark gravy.

These two dishes aren’t the only things on the menu. Xin Yue Lai also offers a variety of braised and claypot dishes like Braised Pork Knuckle (S$12), Ginger and Wine Chicken (S$12), Pig Skin (S$4), and Pig Stomach Soup (S$8).

Xin Yue Lai’s side menu has items like You Tiao (S$2), the perfect fried dough side to bak kut teh, and Steamed Seabass Fillet With Salted Black Soya Sauce (S$12).
