New in town: The Udang Clan – Homely prawn noodles, laksa & more in CBD

As a top MICE destination, Singapore’s city centre is a focal point of the endlessly active corporate world. Affordable food can thus be a hard find, especially of the familiar hawker variety. Seeking to resolve our costly food woes is The Udang Clan, a Muslim-owned diner opened on 7 Aug 2023 along Raffles Quay.

Don’t let the unusual name dissuade you – it’s in reference to the tight-knit family that runs the eatery. If you’re not all that familiar with the Malay language (guilty as charged here), ‘Udang‘ means shrimp. Put two and two together, and you have a family-run diner touting their seafood platter.

An eatery with that name is practically begging you to try their Signature Prawn Noodle (S$8.90/S$11.90/S$13.90), price varying with prawn size. This clan in particular recommends getting the dry noodles with their own tediously concocted secret blend of sambal chilli. You might be itching to assess your taste buds’ pain threshold, in which case their Traditional Laksa with Prawn (S$8.90) or Gong Bao Mala Chicken Noodle (S$7.90) will destroy them just fine.

Other mains include Prawn Dumpling Noodles (S$8.90) and Pong Pong Prawn Noodles (S$8.90). If you’re feeling extra picky about the noodles that come with the prawns, every dish lets you choose from yellow noodles, Hokkien noodles, mee pok, thick bee hoonkway teow and mee kia. A fried food fanatic like me cannot turn down a simple bowl of crispy Chicken Cutlet Noodles (S$8.90).

Side dishes like the popular Crispy Calamari (S$5.90)Handmade Prawn Rolls (5pcs for S$5.90), Marinated Japanese Cucumber (S$3/S$4) and Shrimp Paste Mid Wings (3 pcs for S$3.90) will see to the rest of your appetite.

Any time you find yourselves wandering the Central Business District (CBD) irked by the plethora of restaurants and cafes, The Udang Clan’s got your (wallet’s) back, bro.
