New in town: Space Coffee — Industrial-style cafe in Geylang serving carrot cake with big prawns

New cafe Space Coffee has popped up amidst the vibrant local F&B scene in Geylang!

When one mentions Geylang, what immediately comes to mind are the countless number of durian stalls, street-style local delicacies as well as the famed supper spot 126 Dim Sum Wen Dao Shi.

To introduce a different aesthetic, Space Coffee incorporates beige walls with a gray brick installation and hickory brown furniture to create an industrial-like vibe with minimalistic decor.

The usual cafe items are offered including sourdough toasts and bakes. Space Coffee carefully aligns its concept to integrate into the local street scene by adding well-known local delights into their menu. One example would be their Coconut Bun (S$4).

However, one item has been gaining particular attention from online foodies— that is their SPACE C.C (S$15)

Visually, the dish is almost identical to the hawker-style white carrot cake, with the addition of seared large prawns. The chunks of carrot cake used are significantly larger, which reminds me of the Johor Bahru-style carrot cake. Having those plump and juicy prawns with their homemade sambal is what sets them apart from the usual hawker dish.

While one may deem the S$15 price point too high for what we are accustomed to, I believe there must be a reason for its hype.

Drinks wise, expect to pay S$7 for an Iced Latte and S$8 for an Iced Mocha. Similar to their food menu, locally-inspired beverages may be found in the drink offerings. For instance, the Lemon Plum Sours sees the traditional lemon juice and sour plum concoction jazzed up with the addition of carbonated water.

In recent years, several cafes have been set up in close proximity to the red light district. This includes Geylang Drip City and Brawn & Brains coffee (temporarily closed). It is heartening to witness more cafes integrating themselves to the local Singapore culture. Mark your calendars for their grand opening from 14 to 16 Apr 2023
