New in town: What to eat at the newly-opened 800-seater Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre

When One Punggol Hawker Centre opened on 31 Oct 2022, I was also expecting Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre to be ready, but I was wrong. And now, it officially welcomes the public with open arms (and stalls) as of 17 Dec 2022.

After a short walk from Sembawang MRT, I was greeted by a facade that seemed to be in the middle of the rainforest. It had rows of creeper plants lining the roofs, and the decor of the place followed a tropical fauna theme.

The hawker centre was packed (as expected with anything that’s new), and I spotted a few interesting stalls during my exploration.

STFU Snack That Food Up (#01-47) seemed to be a Mexican-Indian stall with options like Chicken Tikka Quesadilla ($6.20) and BBQ Chicken Naan ($6.80). I also found Mexican favourites like Guacamole Taco (S$8) and Tortilla Chip W/salsa (S$5.50).

There were a couple of guys decked in white t-shirts and striped aprons asking people to check out Arabest Middle Eastern Cuisine (#01-32). The menu offers dishes like Chicken Kebab Wrap (S$5), Beef Kebab with Rice (S$8), Hummus (S$6) and even my favourite dessert: Kunafa (S$10).

There was quite a long queue for Granny’s Thunder Tea (#01-55). The budget meal section of the menu got my attention, with Thunder Tea Rice without Soup and “Pu Mi” Thunder Soup going at only S$3.50 each. Otherwise, their normal items like Thunder Tea Rice with Soup (S$4.50) still sounded reasonable to me.

There was a light buttery fragrance coming from Muffin Homme (#01-48), which sells a variety of muffins and egg tarts. On display were bakes like Double Chocolate Yoghurt Muffin (S$1.90), Apple Crumble Muffin (S$2.30) and Original Egg Tart (S$2.10).

I bumped into Madam Chew, who has relocated her Home Treasure Salted Duck (#01-16) stall to Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre. You must try the Signature Salted Duck Rice (S$4.30) and Braised Pork Rice (S$4.80), which blew me away when I tried it 5 months ago.

Noodle fans should check out Lixin Teochew Fishball Noodles (#01-31), who was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2022 at their Kim Keat founding store. I also discovered Boat Noodle Place (#01-13) selling bowls of Pork Special Boat Noodle (S$5) and Beef Tom Yum Noodle (S$7).

Drop by for breakfast at Kopi Satu (#01-43) with their various sets like Fried Youtiao Stick (S$3.20) which comes with 2 half-boiled eggs and 1 coffee/teh tarik. They also have budget meals at S$2.50 with items like 2 Half Boiled Egg + Teh O or Toast Bread w Kaya Butter + Kopi O.

For those who love to drink, Scissors Paper Stone (#01-53) sells pints of Asahi Black and Kronenbourg Blanc 1664 (S$9 each).

With the completion of Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre, the residents of Sembawang finally have a new spot to enjoy hawker food.

I wonder which hawker centre will be next in line? I’ll be waiting eagerly!
