You wait four years for one, and then two come along at once.

Tom Cruise has revealed that a sixth movie in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series is in the offing, and could start filming next year.

Ethan Hunt himself dropped the news during an appearance on 'The Daily Show’ in the US, while promoting 'Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’, the latest movie in the action franchise.

“We’re starting to work on it now. We’ll probably start shooting it next summer,” he said.

Though the news hasn’t been confirmed by Paramount, Cruise has produced all five movies thus far, so it’s safe to assume he knows his onions.

But it’s a departure from the previous schedule of the previous ’M:I’ movies, which have largely been released with four or five year gaps between instalments.

The first film emerged in 1996, followed by ’M:I 2’ in 2000, ’M:I 3’ in 2006, and ’M:I 4’ in 2011.

Rumours emerged earlier this year that a sixth movie was being developed.

'Rogue Nation’, which reunites Cruise’s secret agent with crew members Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and William Bradnt (Jeremy Renner), is due out today across the UK.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, it finds the team under threat of being disbanded by CIA boss Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin), while facing off against ex-operatives the Syndicate.
