Tiong Bahru Hainanese Curry Rice & Chicken Rice at Bukit Merah closes after nearly 20 years

Food that is nestled in the neighbourhood is always the best. Tucked under the HDB blocks of Henderson Road is Tiong Bahru Hainanese Curry Rice & Chicken Rice, which has been serving affordable plates of chicken rice for about 20 years. As of 25 Dec 2022, the stall that has served as a favourite spot to many will say its goodbyes and has officially closed.

The news of its official closure came from a Facebook post posted on 25 Dec 2022, stating that it was their last day. This resulted in an uproar of emotions as the closure came as a surprise for many.

Located in the heart of the Tiong Bahru estate, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Curry Rice & Chicken Rice has been serving comfort food from S$3. Personally, I used to patronise this store for a plate of steamed chicken rice, back when it was just S$2.50. As a student with limited allowance, this was our go-to fix. Yet even with the recent increase of prices, they’ve still managed to keep their prices affordable for all.

Some good news from this is that the eatery has been sold to another party, promising a reopening in the future. However, as of now, the stall will be taking a break from operations.

They used to offer a number of items that differed from the usual spread at typical chicken rice stalls. Something that stood out was their Lemon Chicken Rice (S$3.50), which featured a crispy chicken cutlet accompanied by a tangy sweet lemon sauce, which tasted superbly awesome. Aside from that, they have a couple of side dishes such as fried beancurd, ngoh hiang and vegetables with oyster sauce.

What distinguishes them from other stalls is their free serving of pickled vegetables and a huge bowl of chicken soup upon every order. What I love about it is the comforting and flavourful essence that comes with the soup. They retain a heavy chicken flavour that doesn’t taste too salty or sweet. If you’re in luck, sometimes you might even get an extra portion!

Well, all good things come to an end. The closure definitely came as a surprise to many, but I hope that they will open again soon in the near future. Goodbye for now, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Curry Rice & Chicken Rice!
