Thanksgiving might be a fun time filled with food, family, and Black Friday shopping, but we have to be honest with you: It's also really stressful. From grabbing last-minute hosting essentials to producing a mouth-watering meal to avoiding controversial conversations with extended family, getting through Thanksgiving can often feel like doing a relay race on razor-thin ice.
If one (or a few things) don't go according to plan, it's all too easy to write the day off as the "worst Thanksgiving ever." But in reality? You're not alone here. There are entire Reddit forums dedicated to people spilling the tea on their biggest Turkey Day fails.
For some, the biggest messes come from a simple meal mistake. One person shared the reason why their grandma will never be in charge of pies again. "She forgot that she was supposed to be the one baking the pies for after dinner, so she picked up a frozen pumpkin pie on the way to my aunt's house," they wrote. "After dinner was all said and done, we sat around for a moment then went looking for dessert. She had forgotten it in the car and it melted!"
Another Redditor shared that this year's feast is already ruined. "Just now, I go to take my thawed turkey outta the brine, and my father-in-law added tons of ice to it last night while I was sleeping," they shared. "It's refrozen; looks like dinner is running late."
Meanwhile, others recall smoking-hot cooking mishaps. "My mum was making extra stuffing to go with the meals so she had packed it into these 'oven bags,' which had gotten too close to the edge of the oven and started smoking," another person wrote. "Long story short, smoke detectors were set off and an automatic call to the fire department was dispatched."
Perhaps the nastiest Thanksgiving meal occurred when one Redditor's nephew wasn't feeling well and ate too much food. "Threw up all over the dining room table where the family was eating," they shared. "Spent the next hour outside in the freezing cold trying not to vomit." To top it off, the Redditor reveals that they also started to feel a little queasy. "Apparently I'm the type of person that can't see, smell, or hear someone throwing up without getting extremely nauseous," they added.
Sure, we all want to have a picture-perfect Thanksgiving, but is that realistic? Year after year, mistakes big and small invite themselves into our Thanksgiving dinner. While there are some things we can do to keep chaos to a minimum—such as practicing proper kitchen safety and preparing some dishes ahead of time—the only thing we can do is roll with the punches, laugh off the mishaps, and enjoy the time spent together.
