1. Sunset Boulevard @ The Sands Theatre

Sunset Boulevard is an internationally acclaimed musical by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is an adaptation of the 1950 film of the same name.

The musical tells the story of silent movie star Norma Desmond and her return to Hollywood after being abandoned by the industry with the advent of talkies. Things take a turn after she starts a relationship with struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis.

From 7 to 23 Feb, the Australian cast of the show will head down to the Sands Theatre, with iconic Soprano Sarah Brightman in the lead role. Brightman performed the role of Christine in The Phantom of the Opera both in the West End and on Broadway. We have a true legend in our midst.

2. Candlelight: Valentine’s Day Special

Candlelight is known worldwide for its stunning orchestral showcases. Their signature is their beautifully candlelit venues, as the name suggests. One of their current hits is the Best of Bridgerton on Strings (starts at S$56), featuring hits from the iconic Netflix show’s soundtrack.

3. Orchids from the Land of Smiles @ Gardens by the Bay

On 14 Feb, a new exhibition will debut at the Cloud Forest at Gardens by the Bay

“Orchid from the Land of Smiles” is a collaboration with our friends at the Thai Embassy that celebrates the country’s unique heritage and culture. The beautiful display will recreate many iconic landmarks including the Royal Pantheon, a section of the Grand Palace built to honour the kings of the Chakri dynasty. 

As the name suggests, orchids will be at the forefront of the display. The flower is a national symbol of Thailand, representing elegance and the beauty of nature. Over 40 different orchid taxa will be featured, including the Vanda, Rhynchostylis and Ascocentrum and diverse groups of Dendrobium – all of which are found in Thailand.

A blend of floral beauty and culture, “Orchids from the Land of Smiles” is a gorgeous display of craftsmanship and the beautiful diversity of nature.

4. Minion Land @ Universal Studios Singapore

Calling all Despicable Me fans. Universal Studios Singapore will dedicate a whole section of the park to the animated children’s franchise.

Minion Land will make its debut on 14 Feb 2025, recreating all your favourite things from the Despicable Me and Minions movies. It will be a fun three-part adventure for the entire family.

The journey starts with Super Silly Fun Land where you’ll go on carnival-style rides, just like in the films. Conquer your fear of heights with the Silly Swirly and have a Minion dance party at the Buggie Boogie carousel.

Need a break? Head down to the Super Hungry Food Stand, an all-new restaurant featuring a range of adorable Despicable Me-themed foods.

5. See You, Anniversary (纪念日,再见)

See You, Anniversary (纪念日,再见) is a Nine Years Theatre production which sold out 13 shows during its initial run in 2022. This Valentine’s Day, it will be making a comeback at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre at Funan Mall.

This play tells the story of Kelvin and Annie. Having been together for 29 years, they decide to look back on all the precious firsts they had as a couple every year on their anniversary. However, things fall apart when remembering slowly turns into reminiscing.

It’s perfect for the Anti-Valentine’s Day individuals out there. Witness a slow drama unfold as time takes its toll on a marriage.

6. Asia Comics Expo Vol. 3

The Asia Comics Expo, abbreviated as A.C.E., is a convention for comic book fans, cosplayers and artists to come together in their shared love for the medium. People from all across Asia congregate under one roof to showcase their works and reconnect with one another.

It isn’t only limited to comic books. Fans of various pop culture media can visit the convention and enjoy fan-made merchandise, meet renowned artists and more.

On 15 and 16 Feb, the third volume of the A.C.E. will be at Suntec Hall 404 and the Level 3 Concourse.

The main guest artist for this year is Katsuya Terada, who also illustrated the main visual for this year’s poster. He is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator, with contributions to video games like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Prince of Persia. He is also known as Rakugakingu, meaning Doodle King, a testament to his style, which blends manga, traditional art and digital art.

7. ALICE (in wonderland) by the Hong Kong Ballet

The Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) is an internationally renowned dance company. Boasting a talent roster from around the world, they have gone on tours in Europe, the US and Asia, chalking up over 50 tours to 11 different countries. 

For the 2024/2025 season, they are touring their “ALICE (in wonderland)” production which will be coming to Singapore this Feb.

The ballet is an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s whimsical tale that will be commemorating its 160th anniversary in 2025. Follow Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts and many more on their wacky adventures in the fantastical world of Wonderland. 

With extravagant costuming, vibrant set design and world-class choreography, “ALICE (in wonderland)” promises to be a thrilling experience for audiences of all ages.

8. Doujinfes @ Kallang Leisure Park

Doujinfes @ Heartlands is a cosplay convention that takes place right at the centre of our residential neighbourhoods in Singapore. 

Compared to the Asia Comics Expo, the scale is much smaller. Nonetheless, the quality of the cosplay remains top-class. These homegrown artists are insanely talented.

The next Doujinfes will be at Kallang Leisure Park from 22 to 23 Feb. The 2-day event will take over the space with the usual Doujinfes fair (where vendors will sell merchandise), cosplay contests and many other convention classics. Spend the whole weekend vibing and mingling with fellow members of your fandoms.

9. Van Gogh Inside: Love, Vincent @ Parkview Square

Groundseesaw is the organiser of the beautiful Monet Inside. The immersive exhibition is a 360-degree projection of Claude Monet’s most famous works, garnering many a new appreciation for the artist’s work.

On 24 Jan, Groundseesaw brought 2 more such exhibitions to Parkview Square.

One of these exhibitions is Van Gogh Inside: Love, Vincent. This will be a grand showcase of over 200 of Van Gogh’s works, including Starry Night. These masterpieces will be seen in a new light as the display brings them to life accompanied by specially-composed music.

10. Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco

The Asian Civilisations Museum is a cultural archive of historical relics from across Asia. These artefacts include ceramics, statues and stories from significant points in history. Many of their exhibitions are free and accessible, with various guided tours, programmes and workshops for all age groups.

I know the place from my annual trip to the Singapore Writers Festival. When I went last November, I discovered their latest exhibition that will be ongoing until 1 Jun 2025.

The Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco showcases a set of 84 hand-carved model pagodas that were separated for over a century. These relics originated from Shanghai but ended up in San Francisco after the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915.

Now reunited, they will tell the story of modern Shanghai and San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century. Discover China’s rich architectural heritage as each piece recreates iconic pagodas from different regions and periods in history.
