The new Robertson House is ready to bring you to the past.

Go back in time to the colonial era at The Robertson House by The Crest Collection, a ten-storey hotel that opened in October 2023 after a seven-month refurbishment project. The hotel now promises a journey back in time to the bustling days of the spice trade, guided by the stories of Dr. J Murray Robertson, a key figure in the development of Robertson Quay.

Conveniently situated just a leisurely five-minute stroll from Fort Canning MRT, The Robertson House offers unrivalled access to Clark Quay's pulsating nightlife, the relaxed ambience of Robertson Quay's cafes, and the verdant splendour of Fort Canning Hill.

My personal escapade, spanning three days and two nights during the hotel's nascent phase, provided a captivating glimpse into this quayside heritage.

As you enter the stately 10-storey building, the old-world charm is palpable, with its monochromatic colonial theme elegantly supported by dark wood furnishings, rattan chairs, and colonial artifacts set against tropical murals and maps. It's an inviting space into the past – you have entered a world where spice and tea once defined the economic landscape.

This theme is not just visual; it’s a sensory immersion, enhanced by the ambient scents reminiscent of the commodities that traversed the Singapore River. You'll find similar themes reflected across both the food and beverage offerings in the Entrepôt restaurant and bar Chandu.

The Robertson House offers 336 rooms and suites in seven different configurations, and not all rooms are created equal.

The Deluxe Queen room we reviewed featured floor-to-ceiling windows that offer sweeping views of the Singapore River towards Marina Bay Sands.

For the ultimate panoramic experience, the Riverview Rooms boast expansive floor-to-wall windows, bathing the space in natural light while showcasing Singapore's mesmerising skyline.

Suites on the upper echelons elevate luxury with separate lounge areas and kitchenettes, providing a roomier retreat for discerning guests.

Most of the rooms boast high ceilings, natural light, and are peppered with large vintage photos and botanical illustrations that maintain the historical narrative. Vintage photographs and botanical illustrations adorn the walls, perpetuating the historical narrative while contemporary amenities such as Chromecast-equipped TVs and Atkinsons toiletries ensure a seamless blend of past and present.

Sustainability lies at the heart of The Robertson House, evident in initiatives such as wooden keycards, refillable Atkinsons toiletries, and a filtered water dispenser to minimize plastic waste. Leisure facilities abound, including a serene 25-meter outdoor swimming pool and a state-of-the-art indoor-outdoor gymnasium, ensuring guests can rejuvenate amidst luxurious confines.

There are two main food and beverage establishments and a club-only lounge you can expect in the hotel.

Entrepôt, the all-day dining spot, presents a colonial twist on familiar Asian flavours, offering dishes like Roti John Sandwich and Tiger Prawn Bisque Pasta. Chef Nixon Low, the creative mastermind behind Entrepôt has spent years developing menus that blend Asian traditions with European artistry.

Chandu beckons discerning patrons to uncover its hidden location, where you'll be rewarded with mixologists crafting both well-thought-out and bespoke cocktails. Its repertoire of libations is inspired by exotic tales of yore, as well as local flavours and historical anecdotes.

My absolute favourite is the umami-laden cocktail with a mushroom frozen in the ice. I'm not sure if it's still on the menu, but it's a testament to the creativity of the bar team.

For privileged patrons, The 1823 Reading Room offers an exclusive sanctuary steeped in intellectual charm. Nestled atop the hotel, this elegant lounge pays homage to local education with a curated collection of vintage books available for perusal or exchange. Against the backdrop of panoramic cityscape views, indulge in evening wine sessions or tranquil tea breaks, savouring the essence of luxury tinged with nostalgia.

You can even bring the secondhand books within The Reading Room home, should you wish to, absolutely free!

In essence, The Robertson House transcends the realm of a mere hotel, emerging as a veritable time capsule offering an immersive voyage into Singapore's illustrious past. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a savvy business traveller, or simply seeking an interesting retreat into the heart of Singapore, The Robertson House guarantees an unforgettable sojourn in a cosy space.
