The Ring and The Grudge Crossover Movie Announced

‘Versus’ movies do seem to be back in vogue of late - but we can’t pretend we saw this one coming.

Variety report that Japanese horror franchises ‘The Ring’ and ‘The Grudge’ are crossing over, much in the style of ‘Freddy Vs Jason’ and ‘Alien vs Predator,’ with ‘Sadako vs Kayako.’

That’s right - that creepy white ghost lady with the long black hair over her face is going to do battle with… erm… that other creepy white ghost lady with the long black hair over her face.

Initially announced as an April Fool’s Day joke, it seems producers at Kadokawa and NBC Universal Japan thought there was merit in the idea, as the film is currently in production and due to hit Japanese cinemas in June 2016 - reportedly in ‘4D.’

Just to add a little notoriety, the director on ‘Sadako vs Kayako’ is Kôji Shiraishi, whose 2009 movie ‘Grotesque’ is banned in the UK, having been refused a certificate by the BBFC for its extreme violent content.

1998′s ‘Ring’ and 2002′s ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’ were two of the most critically and commercially successful horror films ever made in Japan, helping kick-start a wave of ‘J-horror’ supernatural chillers as well as spawning sequels.

‘Ring’ was remade in Hollywood as ‘The Ring’ in 2002, followed by ‘the Ring Two’ in 2005. Third movie ‘Rings’ is due in 2016.

‘Ju-On: the Grudge’ also got an American remake, ‘The Grudge,’ in 2004. A sequel followed in 2006, and a third film went direct to DVD in 2009.
