The Force Awakens Is Now The Top-Grossing Star Wars Film Ever

It’s official – ‘The Force Awakens’ is now the highest grossing ‘Star Wars’ film.

It’s been in cinemas for just 12 days here in the UK, but ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has already proved to be the highest grossing film set in the galaxy far, far away – even managing to outsell each of the original trilogy.

Not to mention the prequels.

It took less than two weeks for ‘Star Wars 7’ to becoming the fastest-selling film of all time, to reach the $1 billion mark at the box office… and according to Forbes, it’s now the highest grossing ‘Star Wars’ movie, too.

“This weekend, the J. J. Abrams-directed smash hit surpassed both the $1 billion mark and previous franchise record of $1.027 billion, set by Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 1999.”

Of course, while ‘The Phantom Menace’ is now mostly derided by the fans, it quickly became the biggest box office hit of the entire franchise – after all, it had been 16 years since ‘Return of the Jedi’ when ‘Episode I’ was released.

But that record has now been broken… amongst others.

“The Force Awakens holds the record for the fastest-ever film to reach the $500 million mark in America, a milestone it hit in 10 days,” they explained. “With $545 million in domestic box office, The Force Awakens trails only four movies to become the highest-grossing movie in American history.”

“It’s yet to be seen if the Disney mega-flick will be the first movie in history to hit $1 billion at the U.S. box office.”

There’s also the small matter of its worldwide opening weekend – a record-breaking $529 million. And then there’s the number of advance ticket sales, which smashed the UK record with an astounding 2 million pre-sales.

In fact, at this stage it’s proving difficult to tally every single box office record that ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has broken.

But will it become the highest grossing film of all time?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but I have a good feeling about this.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ opened in cinemas on 17 December 2015.
