SINGAPORE — Texas Chicken’s Real Salted Egg Fried Chicken, introduced as a seasonal menu item last year in July, was popular enough that the American fast food chain has decided to bring it back in time for National Day celebrations. What could be more Singaporean than indulging in the country’s obsession with salted egg-flavoured things?

Texas Chicken hasn’t changed the recipe, which it said took them three years to perfect. Their original fried chicken, made using only fresh chicken, not frozen, to preserve its juiciness and tenderness, is brushed with a layer of salted egg sauce and then sprinkled with a second layer of salted egg crumbs spiced with chilli and curry leaves.

The Real Salted Egg Fried Chicken was named as such because real, fresh salted duck eggs are used, instead of the chicken egg substitute that many food vendors allegedly use, which is supposedly cheaper.

Yahoo Lifestyle SEA had a tasting session at a media preview. We received a media tasting combo set comprising a piping hot serving of salted egg chicken thigh together with Real Salted Egg Popcorn Chicken, as well as sides of fries and a chicken tender, nugget, and honey butter biscuit.

As we bit into the fried chicken, three things struck us at once. The first was how wonderfully juicy the steaming hot chicken was. Second, the combination of the freshly fried batter together with the generous coating of crispy salted egg crumbs was very crunchy. The juicy, tender flesh and crunchy outside combined for sheer fried chicken heaven. That’s the signature Texas Chicken experience.

Third, there is indeed an authentic salted egg flavour, mostly from the thick layer of salted egg crumbs. However, we couldn’t really discern the salted egg sauce which is supposed to be in between the batter and the salted egg crumbs. The crispy batter is dry enough that the salted egg crumbs fall off easily. It’s slightly different from the salted egg fried chicken you would be familiar with at zi char stalls, which is drizzled with gooey salted egg sauce.

Although there are some chilli flakes in the salted egg crumbs, we didn’t detect any real spiciness to the chicken, so it should be fine for those who can’t really take spicy food.

The popcorn chicken version was more disappointing. The morsels of meat had a much thinner layer of salted egg and the flavour was accordingly less intense.

Our verdict? The Salted Egg Fried Chicken combines Texas Chicken’s usual high quality of fried chicken with an authentic salted egg flavour. However, if you’re going in especially for the salted egg kick, you can afford to skip the Salted Egg Popcorn Chicken.

The Real Salted Egg Fried Chicken is available in a few different combos, and can also be ordered à la carte. The basic combo meal, which comes with fries, a honey butter biscuit and a Coca Cola, costs S$10.60.
