Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s visit to Saturday Night Live was a last minute surprise, but they both “happily jumped in” to appear in cameos, sources tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The pop superstar, 33, and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, weren’t originally planning on stopping by the season 49 premiere of SNL, but stepped out to support host Pete Davidson and musical guest Ice Spice, an insider confirms.

“Taylor and Travis are both big Pete and Ice Spice fans, so they came last minute to show their support,” the source says. “It was a surprise to the audience and the staff, no one knew they were there.”

The two-time Super Bowl champion delighted fans with a cameo early on in the broadcast. He made an appearance in a skit parodying the NFL frenzy surrounding his rumored romance with the Grammy winners.

In the sketch, several cast members played Fox NFL Sunday panelists discussing the relationship, while making references to Swift’s songs. Kelce appeared at the end by playing himself as if he was reporting from the sidelines.

Meanwhile, the “Cruel Summer” artist thrilled the audience by introducing her friend and “Karma” collaborator Ice Spice ahead of her second performance of the night.

Kelce and Swift had had a dinner date at Nobu in New York City before the show.

The NFL star and hitmaker were also photographed holding hands as they left the late-night premiere, and then continued spending time together at the SNL afterparty at Catch Steak in NYC. According to a third source, the two were at the post-show event “until 4 a.m.” and were “super comfortable with each other” throughout the night.

The pair stepped out in NYC just several days after the “Karma” singer attended her third Kansas City Chiefs football game. On Thursday, just one day after celebrating the release of her new concert film in Los Angeles, she cheered on Kelce as his team took on the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium.

"They'll figure it out," the second source tells PEOPLE. "He's said it himself, he knows what he signed up for with this attention, but they've spent time under the radar too. They're giving things a real try."
