TAIWAN SELECT pop-up: 17 addictive Taiwanese F&B faves hit Singapore
Thai markets and Korean marts have made their presence known in Singapore. Stores like SGFR have brought US-based products to life in Singapore. However, there is still a gap in the market.
Taiwan, for how often Singaporeans visit the country, has a significant market gap in Singapore. Taiwan’s food and beverage products have evaded our shores over the years.
Now, though, there is an effort to introduce Taiwan-based products into Singapore.
A TAIWAN SELECT pop-up event is being held at Suntec City Atrium Towers 3 & 4 from 19 Nov to 24 Nov 2024 from 12pm to 6pm. This pop-up is a part of the Taiwan Trade Mission to Singapore, Malaysia and Riyadh with Singapore being their first stop.
Organised by the Taiwan Trade Center Singapore in collaboration with the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), there are 17 different Taiwanese F&B products for consumers and businesses to explore and enjoy.
I was privileged to receive a media invite to the event’s opening ceremony. Taiwan is truly my dream destination.
My main concern when deciding whether to visit has always been the availability of Halal food options. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Taiwan is no stranger to Halal F&B products.
The opening ceremony was attended by 5 VIPs: Mr Chen Yuan-Tung from the Taipei Representative Office, the President of the Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association (SMFA) Mr Raymond Tan, Vice President of SMFA Mr Anthony Lee, Director of the Taiwan Trade Center Ms Anna Wu and Director of the Taipei Representative Office Mr William Wu.
Mr Chen Yuan-Tung gave a poignant speech to commence the ceremony, speaking of the need to address this gap in the market and expressed excitement for the Mission’s debut in Singapore.
Joining them at the TAIWAN SELECT pop-up event were members of the media, the general public, and various Taiwanese businesses. The event’s opening was quickly followed by a tour of some of the different food and beverage products.
During the tour, we came across products like chicken essence from Ever-Wellness International Co., Ltd, SURFMAMA instant noodles from Howsler Foods Co., Ltd, tuna essence from HUIKUN CO., and taro-fragranced rice from SHAN SHUI ME FOOD ENTERPRISE.
Some special highlights include the sparkling tea from SAN PIN TIAN INT’L CO., LTD. This product is highly inclusive, catering to Muslims and those who avoid alcohol. It’s an ideal choice for large gatherings, whether with friends, family, or colleagues.
Following the tour, we enjoyed a food preparation showcase by Chef Gary Wu. The showcase demonstrated firsthand the various ways these products can be combined to create a harmonious dish. These dishes were also the ones that would be available for tasting.
As a Singaporeans who loves Taiwanese dishes, it was a lovely experience getting to taste these products.
He prepared the SURFMAMA instant noodles with a side of eggs and vegetables. There was also a drink where they added boba balls (DR. DIARY CO., LTD.) with winter melon tea (Forever Sweety Sugar Trade Company). An array of other products was also prepared for the taste test.
The highlight of the event for me was the boba tea! DR. DIARY CO., LTD. sells instant flavoured boba tea, inclusive of the boba balls. It even comes with special boba tea cups, giving you the feeling of ordering a boba tea drink straight from the store.
During the final portion of the event, we got to taste food and beverages. And of course, I tried out the winter melon tea boba. It was very sweet and refreshing. The boba balls also had a good texture– bubbly without being chewy.
Other Halal-certified products are from SHAN SHUI ME FOOD ENTERPRISE, KING KUNG HEALTH FOOD CO., LTD., and HUIKUN CO.
I truly believe that there is a market interest in Singapore for Taiwanese products. Not only do they provide many staple products, but they also take an all-inclusive approach that hits the wider Singaporean population.
If you are a business that is interested in selling some of these products in Singapore, do ask for a pamphlet. It has all the contact information of all the different companies that are showcased at the pop-up.
The general public is also encouraged to pop by. Sampling kiosks are available for you to try out the products. On 23 and 24 November, you can also make a boba tea keychain to take home.
If you’re interested in buying the products, do approach the individual vendors for prices as not all of them provide clearly-labelled pricing for their products.
Do drop by Suntec City Atrium Towers 3 & 4 and visit the TAIWAN SELECT pop-up event.
