Bela: 'I want to be known as someone who can act'

Bela Padilla recently got noticed because of her alluring—and controversial—cover photo for a men’s magazine. But the Kapuso star said she wants to be known as an actress more than just a sexy and pretty celebrity.

“I’m very happy with doing drama roles. Yes, that’s my dream. More than anything else, more than being known as someone who’s pretty or sexy. I want to be known as someone who can act,” she said in an interview at Relik’s Tapas Bar and Lounge in The Fort, Taguig City on May 30.

In fact, according to the 21-year-old actress, her work in the ongoing GMA-7 afternoon soap opera “Hiram na Puso” makes her feel for the first time that she’s an actress.

“The roles I played before were safe. Now, they gave me a chance to show na I can be an actress talaga. So I’m happy with that.”

Bela hopes to be given a more dramatic or heavy role for her next project in order to test her limits as an actress.

“I found out what I can do. Now I want to use it,” she said.

Having graced the cover a men’s magazine, however, doesn’t mean Bela will do daring roles just for the heck of it.

“Actually, I don’t see that naman as a trend right now, e. Parang, hindi naman pwede masyado magpasexy sa TV,” she shared. “So, I’m willing to do something as long as the character really needs it. Pero, not yung you just do it for yung sexy na sake, you know. I want it to be part of the story.”

Empowering

Bela may be reluctant to embrace a sexy image, but her fans seem to be more appreciative of her March 2012 FHM Magazine cover pictorial based on her current standing on the magazine’s Sexiest Woman of the World list this year. Last year, the “Hiram na Puso” star ranked 77.

“I’m really shocked. I’m happy also kasi I feel like this is the year I found out that I really am sexy. Tapos it’s paying off pala. So it’s nice. It’s a nice feeling,” Bela shared.

She further said, “I feel like it shows women should feel good about themselves. Kasi, being in a contest like this, feeling ko it’s empowering, even if just a little bit, kasi you vote us, e.”

Bela is aware that the controversy her FHM Magazine cover garnered may have helped her in the rankings. But she remains thankful to those who voted for her, adding intrigues are part of her job.

“I find that nothing traumatizes me. I am lucky that I know how to handle things well. What I wanted to do when it happened was to clear it up. So no time for trauma. I wanted to appease the people who felt bad,” she said.

Attention boys

And her love life? Bela said it’s currently “non-existent by choice.”

I don’t feel the chemistry with anyone. And I don’t go out kasi, e. So I don’t meet people naman.”

What is she looking for in a man? For one, Bela said she’s not interested in having flings. He also has to be intelligent. “I wanted someone I can talk to, like really talk to. Someone smart,” she shared.

Finally, she quipped: “And I have a height requirement, 5’10 and above. So gusto ko someone taller than me so I feel protected.”
