Angelu de Leon's advice to teen stars

Angelu de Leon's advice to teen stars

Almost two decades in showbiz have taught former teen star Angelu de Leon the value of respect and love for her craft.

That's why she likes to pass on these values to today's young celebrities.

"Respect the job. Respect your colleagues, your peers, everyone in the industry. Mahalin nila 'yung trabaho nila," Angelu advised her younger co-stars in an interview at the press conference of GMA's newest drama "Nino."

"With respect comes everything na eh. Respeto sa oras ng mga tao. Be punctual. Be professional. Always find a neutral ground. Surround yourself with people who can tell you if your attitude is changing, people who would always remind you," she explained.

Angelu noted that many stars today are products of reality TV shows.

"Ngayon, dahil sa reality TV, ibang-iba na. Marami na sila, minsan hindi mo na nakikilala lahat (when working with each other). Si Anne Curtis nga naging part pa ng show namin dati (TGIS). So, (dati) nakikilala mo talaga."

Different training

She observes that stars of her generation seem to have a different training when it comes to working and treating coworkers.

"Siyempre may mga ibang hindi mo maintindihan na parang walang nakikita. Parang gusto mo rin sabihin na 'Ay artista rin ako,'" Angelu said in jest.

She added, "Siguro 'yung time namin, iba 'yung training sa amin. Parang from the utility, cable men, binabati namin. Iba lang siguro sa generation, but always rin you need to understand."

Work-life balance

Angelu knows her responsibilities as an actress, a mother and a wife, so she tries her best to balance work and family life. The mother of two said she doesn't have a lot of no-nos when it comes to choice of roles as well as schedules because her family understands her work.

"With my kids, I'm very open with them. I say na it's my career, it's my job. Without bias, they tell me if may mali or wala."

Angelu doesn't mind playing mother roles because she is a real-life mom.

She wants to last long in showbiz like her "Niño" costar Gloria Romero, who has been in the industry for 64 years now and counting.

"If you love your job, that really means you're not working for your life. Hindi ka talaga nagtatrabaho kasi gusto mo 'yung ginagawa mo. So, siyempre gusto mo tumagal. Magdidikta naman niyan mga katrabaho mo, press and fans."

Directed by Mario J. Delos Reyes, "Niño" also stars Miguel Tanfelix, Katrina Halili, Neil Ryan Sese, Renz Valerio, and Tom Rodriguez.
