Sydney Sweeney to Star in and Produce ‘The Caretaker’ for Universal

Sydney Sweeney and Universal are partnering up for a film adaptation of “The Caretaker,” based on the short story by Marcus Kliewer.

Sweeney is attached to star and produce with Jonathan Davino on behalf of her production banner Fifty-Fifty Films. A director has not yet been named. Karl Gajdusek (“Oblivion”) is set to pen the adaptation.

“The Caretaker” follows a young woman who lands a caretaking job on Craigslist, only to discover that the stakes are much higher and more dangerous than what was outlined in the job description.

Universal won the deal out of a competitive bidding process after Fifty-Fifty and Platinum Dunes, which has a first-look deal with Universal, brought the project to the studio.

Michael Bay and Brad Fuller will produce through Platinum Dunes and Scott Glassgold will produce on behalf of Ground Control. Executive vice president of production Matt Reilly and creative executive Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project on behalf of Universal.

The news comes a day after it was announced that the “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus” actress will star in and produce Sony’s remake of “Barbarella.” She has two other projects in the works at Sony: Marvel’s “Madame Web,” which is currently in production, and an adaptation of “The Registration.” The double Emmy nominee will next appear in “National Anthem,” alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Simon Rex, Halsey and her “Euphoria” co-star Eric Dane.

“Stranger Things” producer Gajdusek’s previous work includes the Tom Cruise vehicle “Oblivion,” Matthew Vaughn’s “The King’s Man” and the series “Last Resort,” which he also created. Up next is a series adaptation of “Super Sad True Love Story” directed by Ben Stiller and sci-fi film “Courage” with Vaughn.
