Super Bowl 2017: 9 movie, TV spots you need to watch

As millions tune in to the “live” broadcast of the Super Bowl every year, airtime during the game is precious commodity to the world’s biggest brands trying to sell their wares with sleek ads.

The movie and TV industries are not above this – Super Bowl is also a time when the fandom looks out for new teasers and trailers of the most anticipated movies and series of the year.

And Super Bowl LI (that’s 51) last Sunday did not disappoint! Here’s a list of the teasers and trailers that got us geeking out of our minds.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

We just can’t get enough of our beloved space a-holes Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Baby Groot. The use of Fleetwood Mac’s catchy song The Chain further proves that director James Gunn’s music and #feels game is on fleek! We also get more glimpses of new characters like Mantis as well as two of the sequel’s villains, Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) and Taserface (Chris Sullivan).

Logan

The Geek Crusade team will be there at the theatre armed with tissues and buckets when we watch this. We’re expecting Logan, which is Hugh Jackman’s final outing as our favourite ol’ Canucklehead, to be one giant cryfest! This teaser, which uses a haunting rendition of the song Amazing Grace, is already making my eyes all misty.

Stranger Things Season 2

AThe Super Bowl gave us our first clip from the highly anticipated second season of Stranger Things and we’re still freaking out! I mean ELEVEN!!! You’re almost definitely alive right? The year is 1984 and you can tell from the shots of the kids wearing Ghostbusters Halloween costumes and that nice Close Encounters of the Third Kind reference with the giant monster against a red skyline towards the end. There are enough little tidbits in here for our fevered minds to over-analyse. So get to it, fandom!

John Wick 2

Personally, I’m not a big fan of John Wick (read our review) but I am a fan of this action-packed teaser just for that wicked Fifty Shades of Grey spoof at the start. Besides, I’d rather get with Neo than a masochistic billionaire any day. Our dog-loving, gun-toting, kung fu-fighting former assassin is back and this time, he needs to shoot his way out of a large bounty placed on his head.

Pirates of the Caribben: Dead Men Tell No Tales

I think I may be the only one who’s still hankering for another POTC movie. What can I say? Jack Sparrow is bae! In Dead Men Tell No Tales, yet another undead spook is on the captain’s tail in the form of Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). The only way to beat him and his crew of ghost pirates is to find Poseidon’s trident, stat!

Life

This sci-fi drama is about the six-member crew of an International Space Station that is on the verge of uncovering evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. And of course, something goes wrong. Don’t these astro-scientists ever watch movies like Alien, Sunshine and Event Horizon? It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds and Hiroyuki Sanada, who was also in Sunshine, so obviously, he never learnt.

Baywatch

And another iconic retro TV series gets turned into a movie. But I suppose nobody really minds when you’ve got The Rock, Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario running towards you in slow-mo wearing red bathing suits. Like 21 Jump Street and Charlie’s Angels, they’ve turned this movie adaptation into a satirical comedy.

The Handmaid’s Tale

This new Hulu series, based on an iconic novel by Margaret Atwood, is set in a dystopian future where women of child-bearing ability are forced to live as concubines under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship. The new Super Bowl spot gives us a glimpse into the harrowing world that Offred (Elisabeth Moss) and the other handmaids inhabit. The series also stars Alexis Bledel, Joseph Fiennes and Max Minghella.

Transformers: The Last Knight

Autobots, roll out…again. In this fifth instalment, humans and Transformers are at war and with Optimus Prime gone, humanity’s only hope is to unlock the hidden history of the Transformers on Earth. I know what you’re all thinking – what in tarnation is Anthony Hopkins doing in this movie?! Other than that surprise bit of casting, a few familiar faces like Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel and John Turturro are back.

Which Super Bowl 2017 spot is your favourite? Tell us, geeks!
