From now till September, the daily maximum temperature in Singapore is expected to reach as high as 35 degrees Celsius on some days. Due to El Niño conditions and the positive Indian Ocean Dipole that are predicted to develop in the second half of 2023, Singapore will see even warmer and drier weather conditions during this period.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon characterised by the warming of the eastern Pacific Ocean. It typically lasts nine to 12 months and occurs every three to five years, producing widespread and at times, severe changes in the global climate.
On the other hand, the Indian Ocean Dipole is similar to El Niño but is characterised by the temperature difference between the western and eastern Indian Ocean. It fluctuates between positive and negative phases, influencing regional weather conditions. It is also of a shorter duration, typically ending by December to January.
While we can’t stop these natural weather phenomena from happening, we can prepare ourselves for the annoying heat. This includes keeping ourselves hydrated, staying indoors, and wearing loose and comfortable clothing.
