One thing about Preston Mitchum: He’s going to tell it like it is.

The Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard star became one of the breakout stars of the new Bravo hit’s first season, mostly staying out of the house drama but still playing a pivotal role in the house as a truth teller and source of comedic relief. During the season’s penultimate episode, fans got a deeper look into Preston when he hosted a Pride party and opened up a bit more about his identity as a queer man.

For the latest episode of In The Know by Yahoo’s pop culture interview series We Should Talk, Preston looked back on his first season of reality TV, how it affected his relationships with his co-stars and how it compared to his expectations of what it would be like. He also discussed the burden of representation that comes with being a queer Black man on television, what he hopes for from a potential second season and more.

“I think it’s a fool’s errand to pretend that the TV landscape is full of Black people and full of queer people. That’s just not the TV landscape. I take it very seriously, but I also take it as a badge of honor to be a possibility model for many Black queer folks who have, very frankly, probably never seen people like me on TV,” Preston told ITK while discussing the burden of representation. “At the same time, it is a burden. It is an exhaustion, and it could lead to burnout. For me, I’ve always thought through what the Black queer experience means and what it means for me. I could never pretend to be everyone’s representation. That is never my goal, and the burnout comes when you feel like it is your goal to be everyone’s representative. I tell people all the time, ‘I am Preston. This is who I am. I pray it resonates with who you are, but I will never pretend to be you.'”
