Sum Kee Food, beloved zi char restaurant to close Taman Jurong branch from 9 Aug

What could possibly cap off a day better than a hearty meal of mammoth-sized zi char dishes? That was exactly what residents of Taman Jurong had with the familiar Sum Kee Food. Come 9 Aug 2023, though, the beloved restaurant is set to close.

I have been fortunate enough to pay the establishment multiple visits over the past 7 years, usually after a long session of bowling. So, before the restaurant finally shuts its doors on an otherwise merry occasion (National Day), do pay it a last visit, if only to relish the restaurant’s last days.

Sum Kee Food - Ultraman Chicken

Among the dishes worth trying, Ultraman Chicken (from S$17) has always taken centre stage. You get a powerful but not overwhelming coating of salted egg sauce around sizeable chunks of chicken. The crisp, solid exterior denotes a good fry. Not particularly outstanding in the way of preparation but as a staple order, it will do no one any good to miss out on prime protein.

Their Curry Fish Head (S$45.60) rightfully receives significant attention from other diners given its status as a local delicacy. Regretfully, having a low spice tolerance stops me from taking more than a few spoonfuls before flavour becomes pain.

Sum Kee Food - Dumplings and Carrot Cake

An elementary palate can be easy to appease, mine especially. Not once have I missed ordering their Fried Carrot Cake (2pcs for S$5.20) and Pan-fried Dumplings (6pcs for S$8.20). Are these menu items icons of sin? Yes, and all the more reason I will miss downing them guiltlessly.

To those already mourning the loss, fret not, as Sum Kee Food will continue to run their Telok Blangah branch with island-wide delivery. Hopefully, their Jurong-exclusive dim sums will be made available Southside after the branch closes on 9 Aug 2023.
