Suicide Squad has earned more than Captain America: The Winter Soldier

‘Suicide Squad’ has toppled Cap at the box office.

Despite overwhelmingly negative reviews, it looks as though ‘Suicide Squad’ has defied the critics. Highly anticipated by audiences across the globe, ‘Suicide Squad’ opened to a record-breaking $267.1 million - the highest opening movie for the month of August.

And it seems audiences are still turning out to see it.

According to Box Office Mojo, ‘Suicide Squad’ has now made a staggering $718.8 million at the box office. Not only does this make the off-kilter comic book movie a huge success, but it also surpasses the highly-regarded ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, which managed a grand total of $714.4 million.

Marvel won’t be too pleased about that.

For one thing, ‘Suicide Squad’ was dogged by negative reviews ahead of the movie’s opening, with most critics in agreement that the film’s loosely entertaining plot soon fell completely flat.

But most surprisingly, this follows the crushing news that ‘Suicide Squad’ would not be opening in China - one of the world’s biggest film markets. Despite this enormous setback, it looks as though Warner Bros. have managed to bag an unexpected hit.

And with a sequel on the way and a Harley Quinn spin-off, it could be big business.

Does that mean ‘Suicide Squad’ is better than we thought?

Not exactly. ‘Suicide Squad’ currently holds a 26% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, and while the user rating is a lot higher at 67%, that really doesn’t make it a good movie. Metacritic gives the film a pretty sloppy 40% with a user score of 6.5 out of 10. Again, a dire turnout from the critics accompanied by a very average user rating.

Either way, it’s made Warner Bros. a ton of cash.

‘Suicide Squad’ opened in cinemas on 5 August 2016.
