The world is going to the clowns and Stephen King is over it. With Halloween quickly approaching, the continual fear of clowns terrorizing towns is becoming more and more intense and King has a message for those evil clowns.

The clown craze started back in August when a man dressed as a clown was trying to lure children into the woods in South Carolina. When reports first surfaced, there was a creepy masked clown terrorizing kids in two different apartment complexes in the state and everyone took notice. It’s safe to say our fear of clowns became all too real almost instantly.

King, who is responsible for probably most people’s uneasiness around clowns, due to his creation of Pennywise, the murderous clown from his 1986 horror novel, It, previously spoke out about the creepy clowns and their menacing ways in an interview with Bangor Daily News in September.

“I suspect it’s a kind of low-level hysteria, like Slender Man, or the so-called Bunny Man, who purportedly lurked in Fairfax County, Virginia, wearing a white hood with long ears and attacking people with a hatchet or an ax,” King told the publication.

“The clown furor will pass, as these things do, but it will come back, because under the right circumstances, clowns really can be terrifying.”

The current creepy clown epidemic has been getting worse after threats were made on numerous Connecticut schools on Instagram and a group of clowns targeted college campuses in early October. With all this negative clown press and fear at an all-time high, King tweeted at the bad clowns and hopefully they’ll listen.

“Hey, guys, time to cool the clown hysteria–most of em are good, cheer up the kiddies, make people laugh,” King tweeted on October 3.

While clowns at children’s parties aren’t scary, these new clowns are a whole other level of weird. Here’s to hoping there aren’t any more clown incidents this Halloween season. Just in case, we’d advise staying away from anyone dressed like a clown — happy or creepy!
