Stephen Colbert: Donald Trump Promises Ben Carson Will Find “True Meaning Of HUD”

UPDATED with video: “It was an exciting day for President Trump, because he went on a field trip,” Stephen Colbert said at the top of Late Show. “He was so worried Steve Bannon would not sign his permission slip,” Colbert snarked.

He took a previously postponed tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, at the end of which, he honored the greatest figures of African-American history, including Sojourner Truth, Booker T. Washington – and Ben Carson.

Carson, Trump’s pick for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, joined Trump as he made remarks at the museum.

Trump’s tour and photo op was seen as doing damage control for last week’s news conference, in which he suggested to a female African-American journalist that she set up a meeting between him and black lawmakers. Trump also got ridiculed after the newser for having told a reporter from a Jewish publication to sit down and be quiet, after the reporter asked how Trump would combat the growing number of anti-Semitic assaults in the country.

At the museum event, Trump praised Carson, saying: “HUD has a meaning far beyond housing. If properly done, it’s a meaning that’s as big as anything there is. And Ben will be able to find that true meaning, and the true meaning of HUD, as its secretary.”

Continued Trump: “I love this guy; he’s a great guy, really a great guy. He can tell you better than me, but I tell you we really started something with Ben.”

Colbert agreed. “Trump really started something by hiring Ben Carson,” he said, calling it, “the greatest achievement for African Americans, since about four weeks ago when we had a black president.”
