Let’s be honest: The words “Starbucks” and “Free” don’t go together very often, but when they do, it’s something to be celebrated. The Seattle-based coffee giant recently announced that customers can get a (mostly) free short Signature Hot Chocolate every Saturday and Sunday through the end of December. We say “mostly” because to score the free hot choc, you will need to order one other grande-or-larger handcrafted drink.

Starbucks defines a handcrafted drink as one that is made by one of its baristas, which means that you’ll qualify for the free hot chocolate if you order one of your longtime faves, one of the new holiday menu items, or another barista-perfected coffee or tea. You won’t get the bonus hot chocolate if you only order a brewed hot or iced coffee or buy a pre-packaged ready-to-drink beverage. The deal is limited to one free hot chocolate per order and is available in-store or in the drive-thru. Orders placed through the Starbucks app are not eligible.

The free short Signature Hot Chocolate offer will be available on Saturday and Sunday, December 16 and 17; Saturday and Sunday, December 23 and 24; and Saturday and Sunday, December 30 and 31. (That’s right: your last Starbucks order of 2023 could come with a free hot chocolate.)

Starbucks has also launched a promotion called Festive Thurs-Yays, which gives Starbucks Rewards members half off a drink on Thursday afternoons between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. To claim the 50% discount, you’ll have to be a Starbucks Rewards Member, but the deal is good on all of its handcrafted drinks, including the newest additions to its holiday beverage menu. That offer will be good on December 14, 21, and 28. If you have not signed up for Starbucks Rewards, you can join the free program on the Starbucks website or through the Starbucks app.

In November, Starbucks debuted a new holiday drink, the Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai, made with oat milk, black tea, and a combination of cinnamon and other “warming spices.” Its Holiday Menu for this festive season also includes the Caramel Brulée Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte, and the always classic Peppermint Mocha. It also brought the fan-favorite Gingerbread Latte back for the first time since 2019.

The Starbucks stores that create and serve Oleato drinks — yes, the ones made with olive oil – will also be crafting their very first Oleato holiday drink, the Oleato Gingerbread Oatmilk Latte.

Whatever your regular order is, we hope you can take advantage of Starbucks’ holiday deals. And please, please be patient and polite with the baristas behind the counter, because this is sure to be a busy time for them. After all, how often can you pick up a (mostly) free Signature Hot Chocolate?
