Star Wars: Rogue One’s K-2SO Is The Droid You’re Looking For

It’s official – C-3PO has competition for the funniest droid in ‘Star Wars’.

It’s no secret that Alan Tudyk is playing a droid in the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ spin-off, ‘Rogue One’. But very little has been revealed about his character… until now.

Appearing alongside the ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ cast at Star Wars Celebration Europe, the 45-year-old actor revealed why K-2SO is different to most other droids.

“He speaks his mind and says things that could be … unsettling,” he said. “He’s very honest. If you know any old people, it’s like that. He says whatever he thinks.”

Although we’ve seen glimpses of K-2SO in ‘Rogue One’ promotional materials, this is the first proper introduction we’ve had to Alan Tudyk’s droid… and it seems he’s not exactly happy being bossed around.

“But look,” he said as a clip of K-2SO began rolling. “She gives him her pack and he doesn’t…really…”

The clip we were shown features Jyn Erso handing off some supplies to the droid… who then promptly dumps them on the floor as soon as her back is turned. It sounds as though K-2SO is going to follow in the tradition of the outspoken, mischievous droid.

But don’t expect beeps and boops like R2-D2.

“That’s K-2,” he explained. “Go get the bags droid… No, I’d rather not. It’s not my thing.”

Why is he like that? It looks as though it’s all down to his current owner and best pal Captain Cassian Andor.

“Cassian re-programmed him,” explained Tudyk. “And he did like, a data wipe… and when he re-programmed him, he’s not quite all there.”

“It was great to play him,” he added. “There’s some amazing droids in the ‘Star Wars’ universe such as C-3PO… I met him at [The Force Awakens] party at opening night and I said ‘I’m K-2SO, I’m going to be the next droid in the series of droids I guess’ and he said ‘Do you wear a suit or… are you CGI?’ I said ‘Oh, I’m CGI’ and he said ‘You shit’.”

Of course, Anthony Daniels has appeared in every ‘Star Wars’ movie as C-3PO… but unlike Alan Tudyk’s stint in motion capture clothing Daniels has to be screwed into the gold suit.

Either way, it looks as though K-2SO is going to be the new droid-shaped comic relief.

And they couldn’t have cast the role any better.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
