New stall Hei Po Po sells crayfish, chicken & prawn hor fun at Old Airport Road Food Centre
There are countless variations of hor fun in Singapore. Hei Po Po has opened for business in Old Airport Road Food Centre selling hor fun dishes with a myriad of toppings. The hawker centre is already home to multiple famous brands that most hawker centre-goers are already familiar with.
Hei Po Po opened its doors on 1 Jul 2023 with an opening promotion. A discount of S$2 was given when any 2 items were purchased. Unfortunately, the deal only lasted until 2 Jul 2023. Nonetheless, a variety of savoury noodle dishes await diners in the coming days.
Hor fun is a local noodle dish that consists of flat noodles drenched in an ultra thick and almost gloopy egg gravy. Although the dish is usually a wet version, a strong wok hei fragrance and flavour should be attained in every serving.
My personal favourite topping to pair with these smoky noodles are tender beef slices and spoonfuls of deep-fried lard cubes.
The most basic rendition comes with an assortment of small prawns, squid rings and pork slices. Although this particular item was not on the online menu poster, the most exciting menu item is the Crayfish Hor Fun (S$10).
The dish features a large portion of succulent white crayfish meat. Thin and flat white rice noodles are used and they act like sponges in soaking up that umami gravy.
Other items sold include the Chicken Hor Fun (S$6), All Prawn Hor Fun (S$8) and Prawn Wonton Soup (S$5). Diners may also customise their noodle bowl with side dishes. Extra servings are reasonably priced with the popular choices being Prawns (S$3), Chicken (S$2) and Vegetable (S$1) respectively.
The price range may be slightly steep in comparison to other famous hor fun stalls in Singapore. One can only hope that they do live up to expectations and justify the price tag!
