‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Is Coming to Virtual Reality

Spider-Man’s superpowers have inspired generations of comic book and movie fans, and now they can experience them — virtually — firsthand, as Sony announced a multi-platform virtual reality experience tied to its summer blockbuster, “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

“Spider-Man: Homecoming VR” will be available to Spidey fans at no charge starting June 30 on all major VR platforms, such as Sony’s PlayStation VR, HTC Vive and Facebook’s Oculus Rift. But for fans who can’t wait — and are fortunate enough to live in certain chosen locations — they can strap into “Spider-Man: Homecoming VR” at select Cinemark Theaters in the United States and the CineEurope show in Barcelona, Spain.

The VR experience gives prospective Spider-Men and Women access to new Stark Industries upgrading webshooters, putting them through target practice to get ready to take on The Vulture.

“Spider-Man is the most beloved superhero in the world, so we knew ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming VR’ had to be something special,” Jake Zim, Sony Pictures’ senior vice president of virtual reality, said in a statement. “Fans can wear the suit, fire the new web shooters – THWIP! – and swing through the air in a faceoff with The Vulture. It’s every fan’s fantasy turned into virtual reality.”

The virtual reality experience was produced by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality and developed by CreateVR, using Intel-powered Dell Precision computers. “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which stars Tom Holland as the title character based on the Marvel comic book from Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, will be released wide on July 7.
