‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ Sets Netflix Premiere Date

EXCLUSIVE: After a stellar run in theaters that saw it come in as the highest-grossing film in the history of Sony Pictures Animation, Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has set its Netflix premiere date. One of the top grossers of the year at a take of over $690M worldwide, the film bows in the U.S. on October 31. Details as to rollout in other territories haven’t been disclosed.

The first of two sequels to Sony’s 2018 Best Animated Feature Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, starring Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, Across the Spider-Verse comes to Netflix as part of the studio’s five-year pay-one licensing deal with the streamer, which has seen myriad Sony titles arrive to top the service’s charts. Pic joins a fall slate of titles made for the whole family that includes Best Christmas Ever (November 16) starring Heather Graham, the new animated Adam Sandler pic Leo (November 21), McG’s Family Switch (November 30) starring Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms, and Aardman sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (December 15).

Scripted by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and David Callaham, Across the Spider-Verse picks up with Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Miles Morales (Moore), as he reunites with Gwen Stacy (Steinfeld), encountering a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the very existence of the multiverse as he’s catapulted through it. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson directed the pic, based on the Marvel Comics. The stacked voice cast also includes Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Karan Soni, Jason Schwartzman, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Greta Lee, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, Shea Whigham and Oscar Isaac. Opening in theaters June 2nd, the film was produced by Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Lord, Miller and Christina Steinberg, with Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Aditya Sood, Rebecca Karch and Brian Bendis serving as executive producers.

While the third forthcoming animated Spidey film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, was originally slated to bow in theaters March 29, 2024, Sony was forced to move it off its date amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike, which made voice over work impossible to complete. A new date has not yet been set.
