Spice Girl Mel C on Her Eating Disorder: "I Was in Denial for a Long Time"

The Spice Girls dominated the '90s pop scene with the messages of girl power, but Melanie Chisolm, aka Mel C and Sporty Spice, admitted that being in the group damaged her self esteem at the time.

"I joined the Spice Girls when I was 20 and it was an insane time. I developed an eating disorder," she shares in a brief tell-all on BBC Good Food. "I was in the spotlight, being photographed constantly, and I started to become self conscious of my body image."

The singer said she didn't want to admit that she had an issue, adding, "I was in denial for a long time but I always wanted to get better. She continued, "I had talking therapies and holistic therapies, like acupuncture. Sport became really important to me too."

Thankfully, those days appear to be behind her, with Chisolm saying she has a "healthy relationship with food."

"We're so much more aware of nutrition nowadays," she continues. "When I was a teenager, I didn't know the difference between a protein and a carb. We need to get back to realizing that we are what we eat."

For now, Mel C had left her Spice Girls days behind her. Although she often posts throwback snaps of the group, she told the BBC it doesn't seem she like she'll be game for a Spice Girls reunion tour any time soon.

"We're four individuals, we've gone on to have separate lives and careers and want different things," she explained when asked about it.

Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) also addressed the tour chatter earlier this year, saying on The Late Late Show that she, Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell were planning to reunite on stage by themselves.

"Victoria's busy with her fashion line. Mel C is doing her own album. So they gracefully said, 'You three go ahead and do it,'" she said. "We're girl power; we support each other. So us three went, 'OK, let's just us three do it.'"
