Though Rio de Janeiro often gets all the attention, Brasilia has plenty of charms, too.

Interest in digital nomadism only continues to grow, and for many, Brazil is a top destination. In 2022, the country launched a digital nomad visa and is famous for its communities that are dedicated to attracting foreign talent, such as the beach town of Pipa. And this October, the country's capital, Brasília, was just named the best city in the world for digital nomads by the travel insurance comparison site, InsureMyTrip.

For its analysis, InsureMyTrip evaluated 40 cities in countries that issue digital nomad visas and factored in metrics such as the cost of living, internet speeds, how much sunshine each location gets per day, and overall happiness. In its report, it called out several of Brasília's standout features such as its relatively low cost of living (digital nomads can live here comfortably on a budget of less than $900 per month) and its fast average Wi-Fi speed of 165 megabits per second.

“Brasília became the capital city in 1960 and is centrally located, with a wealth of leisure activities and cultural venues," InsureMyTrip reported. "It has a happiness score of 6.3, and the weather is also an appealing motive to live there short-term, with an average of 6.6 hours of sunshine a day to take advantage of while working remotely."

Culture and architecture lovers will also love Brasília's unique urban design, which earned it a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription in 1987. Dreamed up by architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, Brasília has a unique layout that resembles a bird in flight — it took under four years to construct. Located in the Brazilian Highlands, the city of nearly 3 million people is pretty far from the Atlantic beaches that the country is famous for. However, it does have Lago Paranoá, one of the world's largest man-made lakes; it's a favorite spot for boating, swimming, and water skiing.

The Hungarian capital of Budapest came in second on InsureMyTrip's list. In recent years, Budapest has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting destinations, and regularly attracts remote workers with its relatively low cost of living, a wealth of historic sites, and Michelin-starred restaurants. But, if a South American city is still top of mind, consider heading to Montevideo, Uruguay, which came in third on the list thanks to its rich cultural offerings and high happiness index score.
