The living room is the place where you wind down, where you recharge, and – if you'll forgive the pun – where you simply live. Whether that's watching TV with your family or catching up on some hard-earned me-time, you want to put your feet up in a place that expresses your personal style. There are many elements to play with – from furniture to walls and accessories – all of which can sing to your unique tune. Read on for my top tips to make your living room feel like you.

1) The emotion of home

Always begin a room scheme by asking yourself: What's the feeling I wish to create? From there, explore what colours deliver that mood. Does a sunny yellow make you feel happy and joyful? Or will sinking into a deep blue sofa at the end of the day help you wind down? Pink is one of my favourite colours – just like receiving a warm hug.

2) Pattern is your friend

With your colour scheme decided, it's now time to layer on pattern. This really allows your personality to shine through. For my sofa collection for DFS, I included no less than 22 scatter cushion options, from plains to stripes, and from florals to modern geometrics, with the idea you can easily mix any of the patterns together to suit your style. Do you like a neat stripe or do you love fabulous florals? Pattern can be applied to armchairs, footstools, curtains and wallpaper, depending on your pattern personality.

3) Tap into a look

What design style is your thing? Classic or modern? Within my DFS collection are three sofa shapes that are timeless but also have their own distinct style. The classic roll arm of the Wakehurst sofa echoes a classic, traditional look. The mid-century modern shape of the Standen sofa is a favourite that sits happily in period or modern interiors. The Fairlight sofa is a clean, contemporary shape. Don’t be afraid to mix old and new styles – it all adds to the individuality.

4) Personalise using art

As a maximalist, I love lots of knick-knacks (official term). I believe they finish the room and showcase your own sense of style. Whether you create a gallery wall with a collection of prints or invest in one large showstopping picture is up to you – just be sure to go bold and include items you really love.

5) Add a statement rug

Finally, think about a statement rug – go as large as you can afford. It anchors the room and brings the whole look together. Patterned or plain? It’s up to you how much colour and pattern you can deal with! A classic Persian rug offers a homely feel, while a natural sisal balances bold hues. Alternatively, a striking geometric pattern creates a graphic touch.
